Craft Prize 2025

Tuesday 18 March 2025

For the third consecutive year, the Sessùn Craft Prize supports the young generation of creators by organizing an edition themed around the creation of a “functional scenography” designed to showcase a collection of objects, accessories, and clothing inspired by the color Indigo, a shade dear to Sessùn.

We are honored to introduce the jury for the 3rd edition of the Sessùn Craft Prize—talented individuals whom we admire for their expertise in design, craftsmanship, and fashion. Meet the jury of the 2025 edition!

Gabriel Escamez

How does your background in design and interior decoration shape your approach?

My background in Fine Arts and Interior Architecture influences my approach by embracing a chrysalis of styles, much like the diverse theories in art. I firmly believe in the personal conviction that drives each individual to defend their vision. In design, everything is possible.

Fiona Khalifa

What does a good functional scenography mean to you?

A good functional scenography should allow the body to move easily while maximizing the use of space by integrating storage that blends seamlessly into the décor.

Eloi Schultz

What challenges do artisans and designers face in combining aesthetics and functionality?

The relationship between aesthetics and functionality varies depending on the nature of the object. A particularly striking example is the chair, undoubtedly one of the most complex cases, as artisans and designers well know.
A chair is experienced with the entire body—it must be comfortable, sturdy, and mobile. Visible from every angle, it must also be aesthetically pleasing. When designing it, the constraints to resolve are numerous and deeply interconnected. Adjusting the angle of the legs for aesthetic reasons can weaken the structure, while modifying the tilt of the backrest for comfort can distort its overall silhouette. It often feels like solving a complex equation while striving for a result that appears effortless and natural. Fortunately, when the initial idea is truly strong, it always finds a way to navigate through the challenges (with a little help) and take shape as a finished object.

Olivier Garcé & Clio Dimofski

What innovation are you expecting in this edition?

We are particularly interested in how AI can be integrated into the development of craft-based products while preserving the essence of traditional craftsmanship. AI has the potential to enhance design processes, optimize material usage, and even analyze historical techniques to inspire new creations. However, the real challenge—and opportunity—lies in using AI as a tool to support artisans rather than replace their skills. It would be interesting to explore how AI can act as a bridge between past craftsmanship and contemporary design, pushing boundaries without compromising authenticity.

Pauline Vincent

In your opinion, should a project prioritize practicality or aesthetics?

While practicality and comfort are essential in a project, I am the kind of person who will always prioritize charm and soul when designing a space. A misplaced old door, a stela, or an opening that isn’t perfectly straight… Imperfection, in its aesthetic aspect, will always have my preference.

Madeleine Froment & Mehdi Adraa

How can we combine innovation, ethics, and sustainability?

Combining innovation, ethics, and sustainability starts with questioning why and how we produce today.
By prioritizing local, small-scale approaches, collaborating with artists rooted in their communities, and rethinking production methods and product lifespan, sustainable solutions emerge naturally.
Innovation arises by placing creativity at the heart of the process, fostering experimentation and transformation. Finally, it is essential to put people at the center of this approach, valuing personal fulfillment over the pursuit of recognition.

Nathalie Dewez

What advice would you give to the candidates for this new edition?

Stay true to yourself in your creations and remain faithful to your personality—that’s how you will be the most universal.

Julie Aleman

What will be your key criteria for selecting the first prize winner of the Sessùn Craft Prize?

A unique, surprising, creative, and ingenious project that aligns with the values and principles that inspire us.

.

Emma François Grasset

What are your expectations for the third edition of the Craft Prize?

The Craft Prize offers us a unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in diverse creative worlds and meet emerging artisans and designers. It also allows us to build connections and explore potential future collaborations.
